Last year, ExcoMag Africa caught up with the witty entrepreneur, academic, and innovator Dr. Langa Moyo, founder and director of Comrades Beverages, a leading beverages company based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. From handcrafted gin to community-driven initiatives, Dr. Moyo continues to redefine the local beverage scene. Here’s a look back at his journey, insights, and vision shared during our conversation.
Who is Dr. Langa Moyo and Comrades Beverages?
Dr. Moyo is a chemical engineer and senior lecturer at NUST. Comrades Beverages, founded in 2021, crafts unique products such as gin, rum, and juices with an indigenous flair. Their flagship product, Matobo Gin, is infused with local botanicals like baobab and zumbani.
The Idea Behind the Business
The inspiration for Comrades Beverages came during the COVID era, while spending time with friends at home. Dr. Moyo asked himself: “Why not create our own healthy alcoholic drink?” The mission was clear from the start—to produce beverages that are both enjoyable and promote wellness.
Products, Services, and Growth
- Employees & Partners: 5 employees and 3 partners.
- Services: Tailored mobile bar service for events, including corporate cocktail events for clients like PRAZ.
- Goals: Expand into export markets within a year.
- Uniqueness: Every product is handcrafted, emphasizing quality and experience.
The Matobo Gin & Festival
The Matobo African Gin stands out as Bulawayo’s first handcrafted gin, winning strong local support. The Matobo Gin Festival is an annual celebration for gin enthusiasts and a fundraising initiative for Matobo National Park’s animal conservation.
New this year: Festival-goers can now enjoy a camping experience at Blue Hills Camp, participate in activities around World’s View and the Matobo caves, enjoy a traditional meal at Amagugu Heritage Centre, and watch a premiere of a short film about local birds—all while celebrating the unique flavors of Matobo Gin.
Leadership & Community Impact
As director, Dr. Moyo ensures competitive products, a strong team, and successful promotion of the company. His passion for brewing dates back to university, where he led the Wits microbrewing team. Beyond business, Comrades Beverages actively supports the community, sponsoring young music artists and local initiatives.
Words of Wisdom
Dr. Moyo shares, “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” His advice emphasizes patience, perseverance, and dedication for anyone starting out.
Looking Back and Ahead
Since our conversation last year, Comrades Beverages has continued to grow, with new products like bottled water and juices in development, exciting festival experiences, and continued community impact. Dr. Moyo’s journey shows that vision, passion, and intentional action are at the heart of African entrepreneurship
